Include family letters and business correspondence of Richard Thomas Walker Duke. Of interest is a series of letters and documents, 1869-1872, re: the licensing of distilleries and the indictment of Joab S. Toombs, distiller, for violation of Internal Revenue laws. Also include document, 1834-1835, listing poor students given tuition in Pittsylvania County schools and a letter, 18 January 1871 to "Dear Col." from Gordon and Cochran, Charlottesville, Va., re: a claim filed by Alexander Craven for Mrs. Jane Craven for damages to her estate "Rosehill," by federal troops after the Civil War. In an undated letter from John Foster to an unidentified recipient he mentions a pension to which he is entitled as a veteran of the War of 1812.
